Distribution of Pachypanchax playfairii in Zanzibar
In 1866 Günther described Pachypanchax playfairii as member of the genus Haplochilus, based on specimens collected from the Seychelles by R.L. Playfair. While the original specimens were collected on the Seychelles, where it is endemic, it was subsequently also found on Zanzibar on numerous occasions during the last century.
