THE NOTHOBRANCHIUS NEUMANNI COMPLEX

Members of the Nothobranchius neumanni species group are characterized in males by an anal fin coloration of alternating multiple bands, including a red-brown or light blue distal band.

Nothobranchius neumanni is characterized by relatively straight dorsal profile, and a marked angular transition between the head and body, which is concave in older males. The anal fin is red with one or two yellow or white bands and a light blue-gray proximal part. The caudal fin is red, or partially red, with a light blue-gray proximal part and a dark gray to black terminal band which may have a narrow lighter red or blue subterminal band.

 

Nothobranchius sagittae from from the middle Tarime River, a tributary of the Ruwana and Grumeti river systems, and the Mbalageti River, in the Lake Victoria basin, is distinguished by its relatively slender body shape and pointed head and snout.

Nothobranchius seegersi from the Malagarasy system, caudal fin red or partially red; pectoral fin hyaline; anal fin yellow with red stripes, proximal portion light bluish grey.

 

Nothobranchius serengetiensis from the systems of the Ruwana, Grumeti and Mbalageti rivers in the Lake Victoria basin, can be recognised by its straight dorsal profile and marked angular transition between head and body.

 

Nothobranchius usanguensis from from the Usangu Flats, the source region of the Great Ruaha River, can be distinguished by its convex dorsal head profile.
